ROCKET CITY CHORUS INFORMATION :
Who we are? Where did we come from? What do we do? Why do we do it? When do we do it?
Where: Our roots are steeped in this truly American art form. April 11, 1938 found O.C. Cash and Ruppert Hall meeting at the Roof Garden of the Tulsa Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma: inviting 24 other men, they shared their vision of singing and ringing chords in close harmony. Today there are more than 27,000 members worldwide who share in this American blend of harmony. Barbershop singing is a four-part, unaccompanied, close-harmony singing. Each part has a unique and important role. The lead sings the melody (the part everyone knows). The tenor sings general harmonizes above the lead. The bass sings the lowest notes and maintains the rhythm of the song. The baritone completes the chord usually below the lead, taking the notes nobody else wants.
What: The purpose of this chapter is to perpetuate the old American institution, the barbershop quartet, and to promote and encourage vocal harmony and good fellowship among its members. To encourage and promote the education of its members and the public in music appreciation. To initiate, promote and participate in charitable projects; and to promote public appreciation of barbershop harmony. The chapter activities are conducted without personal gain for its individual members and any profits or other inurements to the chapter shall be used in promoting the purposes of the Society, district, and chapter.
Why: We sing this American style of music because we love to sing. We enjoy the fellowship in the members who love to sing. We have members of various levels of music knowledge singing in our ranks from beginners who cannot read music, to intermediate singers who can read sheet music, to the advance singers who have a background rich in music knowledge. We invite all men to experience the fun, fellowship and to just have a great time.
